What is an antidepressant drug?

Antidepressants are medicines that treat depression. Your health care provider can prescibe them to you. These drugs help to balance naturally occuring chemicals in our brains that may become imbalanced with depression and other chronic pain conditions. There are several types of antidepressants and they can take several weeks until you start seeing results.

Why is it given?

The doctor prescribes this drug to the patient if they exhibit signs of depression. Some chronic pain conditions also benefit from antidepressant therapy.

How long is it used?

This varies from patient to patient. If this is the first occurence of depression 6-7 months is a common time frame. If you have been treated with antidepressants in the past you may be taking this medication for a year or longer.

Does it have side effects?

Some patients experience mild side effects that usually don't last too long. Some of the side effects include nausea, dry mouth, increased heart rate, headaches, sleep problems, restlessness, and infrequently sexual problems.
