Bed Overlay

Why is a bed overlay used?

A bed overlay is a cushion placed over a patient's mattress designed to reduce the chances of patients developing pressure sores (also called bedsores or decubitus ulcers). A patient lying in one position too long may result in a pressure sore. Normally we move quite often, even while sleeping. However, if a patient is too sick to turn often enough, the patient is at risk for skin injury and formation of a sore. The overlay reduces the chances of pressure sores developing. Even with the best of care, patients may develop pressure sores.

How long is the bed overlay used?

The bed overlay is used as long as the patient is immobile and at risk to develop bedsores.

Is the bed overlay comfortable?

Yes, the bed overlay is usually comfortable.
