What is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug?

As the name implies, these drugs are not steroids. Their main effect is to decrease inflammation. Because inflammation is an important ingredient in pain, these drugs are very useful in decreasing pain from a variety of causes.

Why is it given?

The patient is in pain or the patient's condition is frequently associated with pain.

How long is it used?

This depends upon how the patient feels. This type of medication may only be needed for a short period of time. Under some circumstances, however, it might be required indefinitely.

Does it have side effects?

These medicines do have side effects. One of the most common side effects is nausea or an upset stomach.
